Southwest Wisconsin Technical College needed a visual aid for some of their agronomy classes. Rather than simply showing students pictures of nutrient deficient corn, they wanted to offer a lifelike, three-dimensional view of crop nutrition. So we created these realistic replicas of nutrient deficient corn.

The corn set included two plants. One shows the nutrient deficiencies of boron, manganese, sulfur, copper, phosphorus, and magnesium. The other displays calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, and nitrogen nutrient deficiencies. The deficiencies include both macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients, so students get experience recognizing both types of nutrient deficiencies.

The leaves of the corn nutrient deficiency replicas are painted and sculpted by hand. The plant models are enclosed in a removable clear plastic case that is attached to the base with thumbscrews (no tools necessary for attaching). When the case is in place, the lightweight display can be easily transported using the handle at the top of the case.
