This plant model is a part of a larger summer project for the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee. We created this soybean plant to display the effects of a few different diseases in the plant. This required close study of soybean plant characteristics when it’s suffering from a deficiency or disease. Our team of “plant artists” used a variety of unique methods to recreate discolored, damaged, and withered soybean leaves. Using some special materials, they even made replicas of a fungus that harms soybean plants.
The specific diseases on display in this horrendous plant include manganese deficiency, potassium deficiency, sudden death syndrome (SDS), white mold, and insect feeding. Two additional soybean sprouts show the effects of Pythium damage and Phytophthora on soybeans.
Displayed on a wooden base with a removable plastic case, these models accompany Michigan Soybean staff to educational gatherings for consumers and growers alike.
